The Young Artist Competition (YAC) one of the Frederick Symphony Orchestra's (FSO) many music education programs. The competition is held annually for advanced middle and high school-aged woodwind, brass, string, percussion, and piano performers. YAC is designed to showcase and nurture the finest young musicians residing in and around Maryland.
The Grand Prize Winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship and perform a solo with the FSO at Romanian Rainbow on May 6, 2017. The Second Place Winner will receive a $500 scholarship, and up to three finalists may be selected to receive a $100 scholarship each.

Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Mount St. Mary's University
Exact competition time and location will be provided to entrants no later than 10 days before the competition date. The First Round is closed to the public. Five competitors chosen for the Final Recital Round will be announced no later than Monday, February 13, 2017.
Sunday, March 5, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at Mount St. Mary's University
Five finalists will perform in the Final Recital Round, performing their same repertoire as the First Round. The Final Recital Round is open to the public.
Saturday, May 6 2017 at Frederick Community College.
The Grand Prize Winner will perform as a guest soloist.
For the competition, entrants must perform two contrasting movements from a concerto or major work of their instrument's standard orchestral repertoire. Memorization is preferred, but not required. Entrants will be allotted 20 minutes to perform their repertoire.
Entry forms must be received by the Frederick Symphony Orchestra Friday, January 13, 2017 at 12 p.m. It must include the entrance fee of $50, and late or incomplete forms will not be accepted. Download the YAC entry form below.
